2021 L2 Engineering Hydraulics Tools
What are hydraulic tools?
Hydraulic tools powered tools that use pressurized fluid to operate the hydraulic machines. The fluid moves through tubes and into the tool's actuator, where the pressure stored in the fluid is transferred to the moving parts.
Different types of hydraulic power tools?
Hydraulic Riveters.
Hydraulic Pullers.
Hydraulic Pushers.
Hydraulic Presses.
Hydraulic Pumps & Cylinders.
Hydraulic Hoses & Accessories.
Hydraulic Motors.
How do they work?
Hydraulics uses a pump to pressurize hydraulic fluids compressing using a jack and lifting them up, allowing the jack to hold something up, under the pressure.
What safety precautions do you need to take
You must wear the correct PPE when you are using or around hydraulics like safety glasses, ear muffs, and covered footwear.
How do you maintain them?
Brush and wipe clean all hydraulic connections before you insert them into a hydraulic pump or remote head. Always use fiber brushes when cleaning your hydraulic tools—never metal-bristled brushes.

Safety when using Power tools
SAFE USE OF MAINS POWERED TOOLS AND EXTENSION CORDS
Describe/ Explain what is a mains powered power tool.
A mains power tool is a tool that can only be powered using a cable that is plugged into a wall. And is much quicker than a battery-powered tool because you don't have to wait for the battery to charge.
Where are you likely to use it?
You are most likely to use these tools in your workplace or at home.
Give 3 examples of a mains power tool you may have already used.
Power Drill | Band Saw | Biscuit Joiner |
Describe/explain the task you used it for.
Band Saw - I used the band saw to cut material to the correct shape and size.
Power drill - I used a power drill to create holes in the material and insert screws
Biscuit joiner - The biscuit joiner was used to create a biscuit-shaped hole to fit in a biscuit piece.
General safety around electricity.
What to look for….
- Never put fingers or other objects in an outlet.
- Never use anything with a cord or plug around water.
- Never pull a plug out by its cord.
General hazards and dangers of mains powered power tool
Falling, flying, and splashing objects or harmful dust, fumes, vapors, or gases must be provided with the appropriate PPE.
What is meant by “RCD” Why is it important?
An RCD is a sensitive safety device that switches off electricity automatically if there is a fault.
What is meant by “Double Insulation” Why is it important?
Double insulation is another method of protection against electric shock, it is an extra layer of insulation over the basic insulation.
Hazards and dangers of extension cords
It could get in the way of other people around you and it is a tripping hazard.
Safe Use of extension cords
- Avoid powering multiple appliances with one cord.
- Never use indoor extension cords outdoors.
- Don't plug multiple cords together.
- Don't run extension cords under rugs or furniture.

How to use Air tools safely
- Impact driver - Never wear a tie, loose clothing, or jewelry like rings when using an impact driver. Wear hearing protection when using this tool.
- Air ratchet - Always wear safety glasses with side protectors when using.
- Dust off gun - Never point it at someone or yourself and always wear safety glasses.
- Air riveter - Never point an air riveter toward anyone, wear safety glasses and hearing protection.
